Dark Skies Of The North

I recently traveled north to the OM Dark Sky and Observatory facility in the middle of the Tyrone countryside (Map Ref.). The facility opened last Summer and is an absolute joy to visit. All credit to the local community and council for building such a great centre. This region is only one of three internationally recognised ‘Dark Sky’ areas and I can’t wait to return in the winter to view the heavens through its Meade 15″ SCT. Alwyn and all the staff were very knowledgable, helpful and friendly. There is an excellent exhibition area and it is the perfect way to introduce all the family to the joys of astronomy. For good measure they have boarded walks around the observatory which includes the very ancient sky observation spot, the ‘Beaghmore Stone Circles‘. This is also a brilliant science outreach resource for schools. So why not visit this very beautiful and now, very informative part of the world. (Click image to enlarge)
